Maxi-scooters may not be the most popular choice in the US market, but they have gained immense popularity in Europe due to their practicality, adaptability, and affordability. While motorcycles are often seen as recreational vehicles and luxury toys in the US, they play a crucial role in the transportation infrastructure of Europe and Asia. Maxi-scooters have become a preferred alternative to cars for certain trips within European cities.
Maxi-scooters can be described as a combination of touring motorcycles and scooters. In Europe, strict licensing regulations have led to the development of small maxi-scooters designed for young beginner riders. These two-wheelers, equipped with a 125cc engine and practical features, are often the first vehicles for young city dwellers. The increasing popularity of maxi-scooters has resulted in the introduction of new models, such as the E125 from Chinese manufacturer Zontes.
Zontes, among the many Chinese manufacturers aiming for global success, stands out for its commitment to quality. The E125 is Zontes' entry-level offering in the maxi-scooter segment and shares the same platform as its larger counterpart, the E350. Zontes emphasizes that the E125 prioritizes rider comfort on both short and long trips. The scooter's design aims to convey a sense of comfort while maintaining a sporty and athletic appearance.
On the technological front, the Zontes E125 is powered by a compact 125cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with a four-valve cylinder head. This engine produces 14.6 horsepower, which is the maximum allowed for A1 licensing parameters. To ensure a reliable ride, the scooter utilizes Bosch's MSE 8.0 Electronic Fuel Injection system. Riders can stay informed about their ride through a full-color TFT display with four modes and a Screen Mirroring feature. The instrument panel also includes a tire pressure monitoring system and ambient temperature readout.
In terms of construction, the E125 features standard telescopic front forks and a dual rear shock assembly with adjustable preload for accommodating passengers or extra cargo. The scooter is equipped with front and rear disc brakes and dual-channel ABS for enhanced safety. Additionally, it boasts a six-focus LED headlight and a built-in DRL for improved visibility on the road. Other standard features include an electronically adjustable windscreen and handguards for wind and drop protection.
The Zontes E125 is expected to be available in Spanish showrooms starting in late January 2024, with a price of 3,887 euros (approximately $4,215 USD). Its affordability, combined with its impressive range of technology and features, makes it an appealing choice for budget-conscious riders.
