Enhancing Performance with Öhlins SmartEC3 Suspension System
When it comes to high-performance sportbikes, powerful engines and lightweight platforms are essential. However, suspension also plays a crucial role in ensuring these machines can achieve stellar lap times. Öhlins, a highly respected brand in suspension technology, understands this importance and is at the forefront of innovation in this field. Their latest creation, the SmartEC3, is a semi-active suspension system designed specifically for top-tier superbikes.
The SmartEC3 system made its debut on the 2024 Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP at EICMA 2023. This makes the Fireblade SP the first and currently the only production motorcycle to feature Öhlins' new suspension system. What sets the SmartEC3 apart is its combination of world-class suspension components with cutting-edge electronic controls. While Öhlins' manually adjustable suspension systems are already highly regarded, the SmartEC3 takes it a step further by reacting to rider input, terrain, and braking and acceleration forces in real-time.
The SmartEC3 system offers four semi-active suspension algorithms: Sport, Track, Rain, and Manual. These settings can be easily selected while riding, allowing riders to customize the suspension performance to their preferences. The system continuously optimizes damping based on the bike's behavior and the rider's input, thanks to Öhlins' Objective Base Tuning Interface (OBTi). Inspired by MotoGP technology, the system improves cornering grip, optimizes traction during braking and acceleration, and adjusts suspension settings based on rider weight for improved performance.
In terms of hardware, the SmartEC3 system utilizes top-quality components from Öhlins. The front suspension features Öhlins 43mm S-EC3 (SV) NPX USD forks, while the rear suspension is handled by TTX36 EC rear shocks. To enhance fine-tuning, Öhlins has incorporated a spool valve into the suspension system, which improves comfort through quick adjustments and increased sensitivity.
Öhlins' SmartEC3 system is undoubtedly a game-changer in performance suspension. While currently exclusive to the 2024 Honda Fireblade, it is expected that more motorcycles will adopt this cutting-edge technology as standard equipment in the near future.
