BMW Safety Recall

BMW Safety Recall

On December 22, 2023, BMW of North America LLC issued a voluntary safety recall for all 2021 through 2024 BMW R 18 B and R 18 Transcontinental bikes. The recall is due to potential damage to the low beam reflectors on the headlamps of these bikes, which could break over time with normal use.

If the reflectors break, it may result in inadequate reflection of light, making it difficult for riders to see the road properly and increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, dislodged reflectors could cause unwanted glare for oncoming traffic, further increasing the risk of accidents.

According to BMW of North America's records, approximately 2,369 motorcycles are affected by this recall, representing 100 percent of the population. The affected bikes were manufactured between March 24, 2021 and December 28, 2023.

BMW has identified potential warning signs that riders may notice, including a rattling noise within the headlamp, a vibrating low beam, and a change in illumination of the roadway.

While BMW has received eight customer complaints, 72 warranty claims, and 68 dealer field reports related to this issue, as of December 22, 2023, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries associated with the problem.

BMW is currently working on a remedy program for this recall and has notified its dealer network about the issue. Owner notification letters will be sent via First Class mail on February 13, 2024.

As a precautionary measure, BMW has issued a delivery stop notice (number STOP630009) to its dealership network for both the R 18 Bagger and Transcontinental models. Dealers are prohibited from selling, leasing, or delivering any new motorcycles affected by this recall until the necessary recall service has been performed.
